From the totality of local plantation of Crete, over 180 plants grow exclusively in the area of the prefecture of Hania .

The Brushwood is the most popular ecosystem that covers over 25% of the ground of Crete . It is a typical form of low vegetation of bush, often of round figure. It can endure drought and cold (long harsh summers, severe winters). In the general area of the municipality of Platanias, we can indicate the following plants:

The burnet (Sarcopoterium spinosum), the thyme (Coridothymos capitatus), the kistos (Cistus creticus), the Genista acanthoclada, the Euphorbia characias, the Phlomis fructicosa, the Euphorbia acanthothamnos and the gorse (Calicotome villosa).

An impressive native plant is the Ebenus cretica that can be found at the precincts of hills. By summer, you can smell the exceptional aroma of the flower of sage (Salvia fruticosa). On steep rocky regions, you can locate the Petromarula pinnata with its impressive blossoms. Even by the sea regions one can meet rich vegetation with plants like the three-leaves Violet (Mathiola tricuspidata), the Cakile maritime, the Beach grass (Ammophila arenaria) and the well-known Sea Lilly (Pancratium maritimum).

In lowland regions of the area, amongst the brushwood we can find wild flowers like Poppies (Papaver rhoeas), Daisies (Chrysanthemum coronarium), Clover (Trifolium spp.), Buttercups (Ranunculus spp.), Geraniums, Anemones (Anemone coronaria), Sedges (Gladiolus italicus), Daffodils (Asphodelus aestivus), Cyclamen (Cyclamen graecum), Capparis (Capparis spinosa) and various kinds of Orchids (Orchis sp.).

Some of the trees are Locust trees (Ceratonia siliqua), wild Olive trees (Olea europea), Oak trees (Quercus coccifera), Gorse (Pisracia lentiscus) and Cyprus trees (Cupressus sempervirens).
